My “Crossfit Open” Journey

Earlier this year I set a series of goals to complete by the end of 2014. And taking part in, “The Crossfit Open” was one of them. To simplify it, “The Open” is part of “The Crossfit Games,” a worldwide contest held by Crossfit from around March through July. In the Open, every person in the world is able to participate. Each week for five weeks, the same exact workout is announced. Everyone does the workout either at an official Crossfit gym or by themselves and then recording and uploading their video. Scores are kept and standings are announced. The top finishers go on to the Regionals in their area.

So my goal was just to take part in the Open. I hadn’t started Crossfit in 2012 and in 2013 I was in Costa Rica. All I needed to do was to take part in the workout. And I did it!

Five workouts later and a lot of gasping for air. I completed the final workout at my Crossfit affiliate, Crossfit 515 in Grimes, Iowa. My goal was, “just finish.” And I did it!

I didn’t make it to the Regionals. No, no where close. But the ability to take part, work towards a goal and complete my challenge was a huge boost to me and has kept me pushing myself on a physical level even more.
