As soon as I told friends and family I was visiting Austin, I got recommendations of where to go, what to see, and especially where to eat. And one that kept popping up: “Go to the Salt Lick BBQ outside of Austin.”
The place is located just outside of Austin in Driftwood. Three friends and I headed out there and boy we were not disappointed. For starters the place is massive, with seating outside, more seating next to that, a huge dining room in a barn type setting… Then turn the corner and more seating. All of the mean is smoked in a large fire pit type oven in the middle of the restaurant. I ordered the “Family Style” which is all you can eat sausage, beef brisket and and pork ribs.
I’m not a huge fan of sausage, so to me that was just alright. The ribs were very good. The brisket is what stood out. And then being in Texas, I finished it off with a piece of pecan pie which was also excellent.
Keep in mind before you go, the place only accepts cash, and doesn’t split up checks. So come prepared.
